Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

It's Olympia, and it's rainy. You know what that means? Invasion of cult cinema, with my friend Trevor! I dug up Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! which I acquired years ago and for some reason have never gotten around to watching. I'm pretty sure I only picked it up because I'd heard good things about it, and I didn't even realize Russ Meyer directed it until Trevor pointed it out. Trevor lent be Beyond the Valley of the Dolls last spring, and, after watching Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! last night, I'm making it a personal mission to see everything Meyer's been involved in. It's not just the awe-inspiring badassery of his female characters, but in a sense, that's everything it is. It's been a long time since I've seen a movie with such powerful characters, and even longer since I've seen one with powerful women. Never mind that they might fall on the wrong side of the law--I rarely find myself actually picking sides with film characters, but in this one it's impossible not to. It's nice to see the bad guys win once in a while, and even nicer to see women kick some serious ass.

  1. I love Russ Meyer. I learned about him through an article on John Waters where John mentions Russ as one of his fav directors. UP! was hilarious as well as Faster Pussycat. Also remember a more graphic/violent one called Mudhoney. Was disturbing unless watched with a sense of humor. (how else would they be viewed? lol) however I'm sure the majority of audiences at the time took them somewhat more seriously. Can't imagine.
